The game was classed as an "enhanced remake" of Smash Bros Ultimate, with many of the same features from that game being translated to this one. The game was also announced to have new characters who were not planned for Ultimate, with Waluigi from the Super Mario Bros series being the first announced. These fighters were Crash Bandicoot from the series of the same name, Rillaboom from the Pokemon franchise, Dante from the Devil May Cry series, Travis Touchdown from the No More Heroes series, Lloyd Irving from the Tales of Symphonia games and finally Geno from Super Mario RPG. Announced in the summer of 2020 (the game was to have been a centerpiece of Nintendo's E3 presentation, but the conference was canceled as a result of the Covid-19 Outbreak of 2020), the game featured almost all content (including DLC) from Smash Bros Ultimate, as well as characters that would have comprised the second fighter's pass. Ultimate that would launch with the upcoming Ninfinity console. However, due to pressure from Nintendo on Bandai/Namco, the decision was made instead to scrap this fighter's pass and move the characters into development of an enhanced remake of Smash Bros. In the winter of 2020, following the announcement of Byleth as the final fighter of the first fighter's pass, a second fighter's pass with six new fighters was announced. The game was given a T rating by the ESRB. Sora Ltd and Bandai Namco co-developed the game with newly formed studio Heartland Star, who was also involved in a few other Ninfinity launch titles. He would remain on as a creative consultant and executive producer, though working with a team of other developers as the game's overall director. It is also the last game to feature the direct involvement of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, who announced his retirement following the game's announcement in the summer of 2020.

The game features more characters than any other Smash game by far, with a total of 150 named characters in the base game and an additional 90 characters as DLC, representing 100 different franchises. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch, and is the sixth installment in the Smash Bros series, a fighting game series in which several Nintendo characters (as well as mascots from other series) fight each other to knock opposing characters off the stage.

Due to be released in March of 2021, the game is the sequel to Super Smash Bros. Infinity is an upcoming launch title for the Ninfinity console released by Nintendo.
